The Journey of John Ahrens: From Family Landscaping to Smart Contractors Owner

John Ahrens, the driving force behind Smart Contractors, Inc., has a story that begins in the charming rural town of Frankfort, Illinois. Born on April 24, 1981, John was the third of three boys born to Nick and Linda Ahrens. Growing up on a spacious five-acre property, John and his brothers had ample room for adventure. They spent their childhood riding dirt bikes, fishing in the family pond, and exploring the great outdoors.

The Ahrens family wasn't just about play; they knew the value of hard work. The family owned a landscaping company, and from a young age, John and his brothers were involved in various aspects of the business. Whether it was landscape maintenance, installation, or snow removal, there was always a task to be done. This early exposure to the family business instilled a strong work ethic in John and taught him the ropes of running a successful operation.

As John grew older, his interest in landscaping and horticulture deepened. He decided to pursue formal education in the field and attended Joliet Junior College in Joliet, Illinois, where he earned a degree in horticulture. Equipped with both practical experience and academic knowledge, John joined the family business full-time. He took on significant responsibilities, including managing the landscape installation department, overseeing snow removal operations, maintaining and repairing equipment, and making crucial equipment purchases. His dedication and expertise eventually led him to become one of the company’s owners.

In 2014, John married Christina Rands on April 19. Together, they started a family and had three children. For a few years, they continued living in Illinois, but a desire for new opportunities led them to Lafayette, Indiana, where they could be closer to John’s brother and his family. This move marked a significant turning point in John’s career.

John began exploring business opportunities in the Lafayette area and discovered Smart Contractors, Inc. in Attica, Indiana. Seeing the potential for growth and success, John decided to purchase the business. In February 2022, the acquisition was finalized, and John embarked on a new chapter as the owner of Smart Contractors, Inc.

John’s passion for the industry is evident in the diverse range of services offered by Smart Contractors, Inc. The company specializes in landscape maintenance, landscape installation, snow removal, concrete construction, hauling, and even operates a retail material yard. John's extensive experience in the family business has proven to be invaluable, allowing him to effectively manage and grow his new venture.
